Unlinking Footers Across Sections

Overview

As mentioned above, one of the advantages of splitting your document into sections is that it enables you to have different footers in each section. You will need to do this when:

  • you want to remove a footer from a title page;
  • you want a different footer in a table of contents;
  • you want to restart page numbering in a section;
  • you need to format a footer in a landscape section differently from the footer throughout the rest of a document; or
  • you want different watermarks in different sections.

To do these things without affecting footers in other sections of your document, you need to unlink footers. We do this using the Same as Previous button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Note: Section breaks split the main body of a document into sections, but do not unlink footers.

Same as Previous

When the footers of sections are linked, the words Same as Previous will appear at the top right hand side of the footer when you open it. The Same as Previous button on the Header and Footer toolbar enables you to link and unlink footers across sections. To unlink a footer from the footer in the previous section:

  1. Double click on a footer to open it. (The footer and the Header and Footer toolbar will open).
  2. Click the Same as Previous button on the Header and Footer toolbar. (This will unlink the footer from the footer in the previous section and the words Same as Previous will disappear from the top right corner of the footer).
  3. When you have finished making changes to the footer, click the Close button to close the Header and Footer toolbar.

Moving between Footers across Sections

You can move quickly between footers across sections of a document using the Show Previous and Show Next buttons on the Header and Footer toolbar. These tools are very handy when you are working in footers across a number of sections.

The Show Previous button will take you to the footer in the previous section. The Show Next button will take you to the footer in the next section. Use these buttons to move between sections quickly when you are working with footers.
