Headers and Footers

Overview

Headers and footers are the areas at the top and bottom of each page reserved for information you want to appear on every page. This may include page numbers, document information, copyright information, document ID, etc. Headers and footers enable you to add this information without having to type it on every page.

Nearly every document will contain at least three different footers: one for the title page (usually blank), one for a table of contents and one for the main body of the document. This section describes how to manage headers and footers.

Header and Footer Toolbar

Headers and footers are controlled using the Header and Footer toolbar.

To open the toolbar:

  1. Click on View in the menu bar. (The View menu will open).
  2. In the View menu, click on Header and Footer. (The Header and Footer toolbar will open).
The following diagram shows a description of the commonly used buttons on the Header and Footer toolbar.

The Scribe Template provides generic footer text that you can add to your documents.

To add the generic Scribe footer to your document:

  1. Click on View in the menu bar. (The View menu will open).
  2. In the View menu, click on Header and Footer. (The Header and Footer toolbar will open and the cursor will appear in the header).
  3. On The Header and Footer toolbar, click the Switch between Header/Footer button . (The cursor will move to the footer).
  4. Click Scribe on the menu bar. (The Scribe Menu will open).
  5. In the Scribe menu, click Footer. The generic Scribe footer text will be added to the footer.
  6. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Close button. (The toolbar and the footer will close and the cursor will return to the working page).

Quick Tip Once you have entered text in a footer, you can double-click on it to open it. This opens the footer and the Header and Footer toolbar.
Taking Control of Footers Although the Scribe Template provides a generic footer, MSWord provides you with complete control over footers. The topics in the rest of this section describe how to take full control of all aspects of footers.
