Working with Tabs in Footers

Default Tabs

Most footers in business documents are formatted with three tab settings: left margin, centre tab and right tab. When a footer is open, tab settings are displayed in the ruler at the top of your working page as follows:

= left margin,
= centre tab,
= right tab.

These three tabs are set as the default footer tabs for all new documents created in MSWord.

Move Tabs

When you open a footer for the first time, you may need to reset the centre and right tabs.

To change the position of a tab:

  1. Open the footer.
  2. On the ruler, click, hold and drag the tab along the ruler to the left or right.
  3. Release the mouse button when the tab is in the right position.
Note: MSWord will delete a tab if you accidentally drag it off the ruler. If this happens, hit Ctrl+Z (Undo) to put the tab back on the ruler.

Delete a Tab

Occasionally, you will receive an existing document that contains dozens of tabs in its footer. To align text in your footer correctly, you will need to delete the unnecessary tabs.

To delete a tab:
  1. Click and hold the tab and drag it off the ruler and onto your working page. (The tab will be deleted).

Add a Tab

Before you can add a new tab, you will need to select the type of tab you want to add, e.g., left, centre or right. Tab styles are displayed on the Tab Style button at the left hand side of the ruler.

To add a tab:
  1. Click repeatedly on the Tab Style button until it shows the tab style you want. (The button will display a different tab each time you click).
  2. Click on the ruler in the location you want the new tab to be placed. (The new tab will be added to the ruler).
