Before we start, we need to make a few adjustments to MSWord. When working with the Scribe system, it helps to be able to see all the gridlines and formatting characters on the page. |

Show Formatting Characters

Formatting characters include things like paragraph
marks (
Having all these extra characters displayed on the page may feel a little weird at first, but you will get used to it. Trust me; after a few weeks you won't be able to work without them.

| Show Gridlines |
The Scribe system uses a system of tables to contain text on a page. These tables are called blocks (we'll talk more about these later in this book). Each block is really a two column, single row table with its borders removed. Because the borders have been removed, you need to Show Gridlines in order to see the boundaries of each block. (Note: Although gridlines appear on your screen, they don't appear when you print a document). For now, we need a block on the page so we have something to see when we check that the show gridlines feature is switched on. Let's add a block to the page.
If you can already see the boundaries of your blocks (the grey lines as shown in the diagram above), your gridlines are already switched on and you don't need to do the following steps. If you can only see a single black line on your page, follow the steps below to show gridlines. To show gridlines:
